Kazem Finjan, of Iraq’s Minister of Transportation, has made ancient aliens related statements.
He claims that Sumerians built a spaceport 5,000 years ago in Dhi Qar in southern Iraq which is whence they traveled to other planets.
So, what did he offer in the way of archeology or primary source documentation? Nothing. To what did he appeal? He reportedly stated (I say “reportedly” since I have to assume that someone did not just subtitle whatever they wanted over the guy giving a recipe for couscous in Arabic):
If you do not believe me, read the book of the great historian Zecharia Sitchin, who was an expert in Sumerian studies.
Well, I guess that Sitchin is a “great historian” if you count being pop-researcher within an obscure field. However, when a qualified scholar challenged him to debate his claims Sitchin was not interested. Thus, his mystique remains due to the obscure nature of the field of research and due to popularization of such claims under the term Ancient Astronauts which was mostly done by Erich Von Daniken (about whom you can read here) and the reiterations of such claims via the Ancient Aliens shows (about which you can read here). It was Michael Heiser who wanted to debate Zecharia Sitchin and Heiser went on to set up the website Sitchin is Wrong which is certainly a very blunt and to the point title, is it not?
Well, Kazem Finjan should not be thought to be some sort of authoritative expert simply because well, simply because. Again, he did not appeal to any archeology or primary source documentation. He further elucidated:

When the Sumerians settled here, they knew full well that the atmosphere here was suitable for flying to outer space. It was from here that the Sumerian spaceships took off towards the other planets…
The Sumerians were the first to discover the 12th planet, which was acknowledged a few days ago by NASA and named Nibiru, and which completes its orbit around the sun every 3,600 years.Well, for whatever it is worth, since he brought it up, NASA has stated, “Nibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an Internet hoax. There is no factual basis for these claims.”
